SECTION 8 TO OPEN WAIT LIST

The Schenectady Municipal Housing Authority wishes to announce the opening of their Section 8 Tenant Based Housing Choice Voucher wait list for low-income persons. The Section 8 wait list has been closed since June 2018. If you are currently on a wait list with the SMHA other than the Section 8 wait list, and you wish to receive Section 8 assistance, then you must apply for Section 8 subsidy.  Applying for Section 8 will not affect your status on any other waiting list.

SMHA Section 8 applications will only be accepted online – NO PAPER APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED.  Online applications can be submitted through any computer or smart-phone that is connected to the internet.

Applicants can access the online application at

https://smha1.apply4housing.com/

Access to the online application will open at 9:00 am EST on Tuesday April 7, 2020.  The SMHA Section 8 wait list will then close at 4:00 pm on Friday April 10, 2020 and will remain closed until an undetermined future date.

A very limited number of computer stations will be available during normal business hours at the SMHA administrative office building located at 375 Broadway.  Staff at the Schenectady Community Action Program (SCAP), Bethesda House, and the YMCA are also prepared to assist applicants in gaining access to the online application in their office spaces during business hours.

Please Note: access to computer modules at the SMHA office and other noted locations will be extremely limited.  It is highly recommended that applicants access the online application through private computers, smart-phones or other public internet access points.  Attempting to submit a Section 8 application at the SMHA office is strongly discouraged as it will result in unnecessary wait times.

The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program is available to very low income individuals and families. Rents are subsidized according to income rules and regulations established by the U.S. Department of Housing & Development. The tenant pays about 30% of gross income (certain Federal allowances can be deducted) towards rent and the subsidy makes up the difference. Very low income is defined as a family whose annual income is equal or below 50% of the area medium income.

Due to the large number of people on our wait list, applications are NOT being accepted at this time. When it is time reopen the wait list for new applications, announcements will be well published through this website, local newspapers, and notice to local human service agencies.

Schenectady landlords are highly encouraged to participate in the program.
